Canada Career Week

Canada Career Week activities included Career Day on Tuesday, November 6. Special thanks to all the students and staff that dressed up in their dream occupation. On Wednesday November 7, grade 9 students participated in Take Our Kids to Work at various businesses in Olds and surrounding areas.

  

Post-Secondary Review Evening

Students, parents and community members are invited to attend the annual Olds High School Post-Secondary Review evening held at Student Alumni Building at Olds College on Monday, November 19 from 7:00-8:30 pm. Representatives from numerous post-secondary institutions across Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan will be available to provide information to students and parents.

 

Forum for Young Canadians

Any students 16 years of age or older are encouraged to attend Forum for Young Canadians. ???

Forum for Young Canadians is an opportunity for young Canadians, aged 15 to 19, to increase their knowledge and understanding of the constitution of Canada and of the process of government and its interaction with the people of Canada, and of the meaning and responsibilities of citizenship. The four sessions are held on

March 1-8, 2008

March 29-April 5, 2008
April 12-19, 2008
April 19-26, 2008

Student are chosen based on academic performance, social and leadership skills, extra curricular activities and interest in current national and community affairs.

The fee for the Forum for Young Canadians is $820 (a limited number of bursaries are available), however students are encouraged to seek sponsors in their communities.

What am I going to Do?

As the year progresses, grade 12 students are exploring possibilities for their next year. Students may want to consider the following opportunities:

 

House of Commons Page Program

Each year, 40 students are selected from high schools and CEGEPs across Canada to come to Ottawa and work as Pages in the House of Commons. Pages have the opportunity to learn about the House of Commons while witnessing the legislative process first hand.

Those hired as Pages work on a part-time basis during their first year of study at one of the universities in the National Capital Region.

Canada World Youth

If you’re between the ages of 17 and 29, Canada World Youth offers you the opportunity to become an active player in community development in Canada and overseas. For more information check the website www.canadaworldyouth.org.

 

Agriventure

Katimavik

Katimavik offers young Canadians an exciting experience that incorporates learning and volunteer involvement. It is Canada's leading national youth volunteer-service program.

During their 9 or 8 months with Katimavik, participants ages 17 to 21 live in three regions of Canada. They are involved in exciting volunteer projects in each community.

Millennium Excellence Awards

The Millennium Excellence Award Program recognizes, supports and encourages talented Canadians who make positive and significant contributions to the betterment of their communities, demonstrate a capacity for leadership, and commit themselves to the pursuit of academic excellence and innovation.

Recipients are selected on the basis of:

- Demonstrated positive and verifiable service to the community
- Academic achievement
- Demonstrated capacity for leadership and ability to motivate others
- Demonstrated interest in innovation.

UTours

Are you unsure which university to attend? UTours have produced the DVD “What you Need to Know before you Go”. The DVD is a compilation of current university students from around Canada sharing experiences to aid students with the transition to university or college. The DVD is approximately 17 minutes divided into 8 sections (apply, academics, setting, campus life/housing, nightlife, finance and technology). Student can pick up the FREE DVD from Mrs. Statchuk.
